Business credit cards for UK limited companies
A business credit card gives a limited company a revolving credit line for day-to-day spend, with a representative APR on any balance carried and, on many cards, cashback or rewards. The right card depends on whether you clear the balance each month (look at rewards and fees) or carry one (look at the APR). Below is an independent comparison for UK limited companies, LLPs and partnerships of 4 or more.

Representative APR is shown as published by each provider on an assumed £1,200 credit limit, the standard basis set by the FCA. The representative APR is the rate given to at least 51 percent of accepted customers; your own rate and limit depend on the provider’s assessment. Figures below are taken from each provider’s own current pricing and were checked in July 2026; always confirm the live rate on the provider’s page before applying.

| HSBC Commercial Card | 22.0% | £32/card (year 1 free) | None | Low-APR high-street option |
| Santander Business Cashback | 23.7% | £30 | 1% uncapped cashback on all spend | Flat cashback on everything |

Widely used cards including American Express Business Gold and Platinum, Capital on Tap, Barclaycard Select Cashback, Tide and Lloyds Bank Business are also on the market. We are confirming their current representative APRs against each issuer’s own page before listing a rate, so they are not shown above yet rather than quoted from a secondary source.

Charge cards and spend-management platforms
Not every business card is a revolving credit card. A charge card, such as an American Express business charge card, is repaid in full each month and typically has no representative APR, though it may carry an annual fee. Spend-management platforms such as Pleo issue prepaid or company cards funded from a balance you top up, with per-user pricing rather than an APR, and often integrate with accounting software. These can suit a company that wants employee cards and expense control rather than a credit line. Because they are not revolving consumer credit, they usually sit outside the APR comparison above.
Credit card, charge card or spend card, which fits
- You clear the balance monthly: the APR matters less, so weigh the reward, the fee and the interest-free period. A cashback card can pay for itself.
- You carry a balance: the representative APR is the number that counts. The lowest-APR cards here are the ones to compare first.
- You want employee cards and expense control: a spend-management platform or charge card may fit better than a single credit line.
What to know before you apply
Two points catch out businesses moving from a personal card:
- Section 75 usually does not apply. Purchases on a limited company’s business card are generally not covered by Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, so you have less automatic purchase protection than on a personal card.
- A personal guarantee is common. Many providers ask a director to guarantee the card personally. Prepaid and spend-management platforms often avoid this because there is no credit line to guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a personal guarantee for a business credit card?
Often, yes. Many UK business credit card providers ask a director for a personal guarantee, because the company is the borrower and the card is unsecured. Some spend-management and prepaid card platforms avoid a personal guarantee because they are funded from a balance you top up rather than a credit line. Always check the specific provider’s terms.
Are business credit cards covered by Section 75?
Generally no. Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 protects purchases on regulated consumer credit (personal cards, and in some cases sole traders) between £100 and £30,000. It does not normally apply to purchases made on a limited company’s business credit card, so a business card carries less purchase protection than a personal one.
What is the difference between a business credit card and a charge card?
A credit card lets you carry a balance and pay it down over time, so it has a representative APR. A charge card must be repaid in full each month, so it usually has no APR but may charge an annual fee and late fees. Note that some Amex business cards changed in early 2026 to add a flexible payment (revolving) option, so check the current terms.
Is a business credit card regulated by the FCA?
Lending to a limited company is largely outside FCA consumer-credit regulation, because that regime mainly protects individuals, sole traders and small partnerships. FundBiz is not a lender and not authorised by the FCA; we compare products and, where you ask us to, introduce your business to providers. Any regulated activity is carried out by the provider.
Who can apply for a business credit card through FundBiz?
FundBiz works with UK limited companies, LLPs and partnerships of 4 or more. Individual providers set their own criteria, which can include a minimum turnover, UK-resident directors, Companies House registration and a clean recent credit record. Sole traders are out of scope here.
Not sure a card is the right tool?
A card suits short-term, revolving spend. For larger or one-off funding, a term loan, asset finance or a merchant cash advance may cost less. Tell us what you need and we will point you to the right product.
