Business loan declined? What to do next, step by step
If your business loan was declined, do not re-apply straight away. Get the decline reason in writing, fix what you can, then match that specific reason to a specialist route rather than repeating the same application. Scattergun applications each leave a credit footprint and make the next lender more cautious, so apply once, correctly matched.

1. Understand why you were declined
A decline is a policy decision by one lender, not a verdict from the whole market. Before you do anything else, ask the lender for the specific reason in writing. Most refusals trace to a handful of causes: a thin credit file, a CCJ, HMRC arrears, under 12 months trading, or an affordability ratio the lender views as too tight. The reason matters because it decides which route can actually fund you next.
Where a credit reference agency report was used, you can request a copy under UK GDPR rights and check it for errors. A CCJ that has been satisfied but is still showing as outstanding, or an out-of-date Companies House filing, is worth correcting before you approach anyone else.
2. Do not scattergun-apply
The single most common mistake after a decline is firing off several applications at once. A full application usually records a hard search on your file, and several hard searches in a short window lower your score and signal financial stress to the next underwriter. That makes a second decline more likely, so a burst of applications can leave you worse off than the first refusal did.
The safer order is to check your options with a soft-search matcher first. FundBiz's matcher runs a soft search at the quote stage, so seeing which lenders fit your profile leaves no footprint on your credit file. Only when a lender is genuinely matched to your situation does a hard search follow.
3. Match the decline reason to the right route
Specialist lenders underwrite differently from the high street, which is why they can fund cases the banks decline. The route depends on why you were refused and what your business looks like today:
- You take card payments but have a bruised file. A merchant cash advance underwrites on card takings rather than credit score alone.
- You own or need equipment. Asset finance and asset refinance put the weight on the asset securing the deal, so trading time and credit history matter less.
- The refusal was one platform's policy, not your fundamentals. A whole-of-market re-match can clear the same application at a lender with different criteria.
- The issue is a satisfied CCJ or a one-off missed payment. Specialist post-decline lenders price for the adverse credit rather than auto-declining on it.
Our routing by decline reason maps each common refusal to the specialist route that engages with it, and the post-decline hub sets out who still lends by reason for refusal.
When to pause instead of re-apply
More debt is not always the answer. Pause and take stock if any of these apply:
- Several specialist lenders have already declined inside 90 days. That usually points to solvency rather than access to credit, which is a rescue conversation with a licensed insolvency practitioner, not a funding one. We signpost; we do not advise on insolvency.
- You have run multiple hard searches in the last 30 days. Let the file settle, then apply once, to a correctly matched lender.
- The decline reason has not changed. Fix the underlying cause before applying again.
Frequently asked questions
My business loan was declined, what next?
Do not re-apply straight away. Ask the lender for the decline reason in writing, then fix what you can, for example a satisfied CCJ recorded incorrectly or an out-of-date Companies House filing. Match that specific reason to the specialist route that fits it rather than repeating the same application to the same type of lender.
What are my options after being declined by the bank for a business loan?
The main routes are matched to why you were declined. Card-taking businesses can look at a merchant cash advance, which underwrites on card flow. Asset-rich businesses can look at asset finance or asset refinance, where the equipment is the security. A whole-of-market re-match can also clear a decline that was simply one lender's policy. FundBiz routes limited companies, LLPs and partnerships of four or more to the lenders whose criteria fit the decline reason.
Does applying for another business loan hurt my credit?
A full application usually records a hard search, which is visible to other lenders. One search is minor, but several hard searches in a short window can lower your score and signal stress to the next lender, making a further decline more likely. FundBiz's matcher uses a soft search at the quote stage, so checking your options first leaves no footprint on your credit file.
Should I re-apply to the same bank straight after a decline?
Not until the underlying reason has changed. Re-applying before you have fixed what triggered the decline, for example before a CCJ is satisfied or before you cross a lender's minimum trading time, usually repeats the result and adds another hard search. Applying once, to a correctly matched lender, protects your file and improves the odds.
Can I still get business finance after a decline if I have a CCJ or a default?
Often, yes. Specialist lenders that price for adverse credit, and asset-backed or card-flow products where the security carries the decision, engage with cases the high street declines. The rate is higher and approval is never guaranteed. See our routing by decline reason to find the route that fits your situation.
